They Accidentally Trained Their Pit Bull-Frenchie Mix to Bite
Betty, a Pit Bull-Frenchie mix, fixates and bites whenever someone picks up a broom or towel. Cesar Millan shows how her owners built the behavior.
The case
Betty is sweet and cuddly until someone picks up a towel, broom, vacuum or laundry basket. Then her eyes lock in, her body stiffens and she goes into a dangerous fixation her owners, Will and Steven, cannot interrupt. When a dog bites the object in your hand, the risk to people is real.
Cesar Millan sees that Betty's owners are unknowingly building the behavior: excited greetings, tug-of-war when they pull objects away and comfort afterward. At the Dog Psychology Center, Cesar helps Betty form a new association with her triggers, while Will learns that true advocacy for Pit Bulls means correcting dangerous behavior, not excusing it.
Cesar's key lessons
- Object fixation is a red-zone state, not a quirk. It can escalate to bites.
- Excited greetings feed reactivity. A dog that starts the day overstimulated has less self-control.
- Pulling the object away creates tug-of-war and strengthens the fixation.
- Walking, place work, calm corrections and repetition help a dog choose differently around triggers.
- Real advocacy is honest. Leadership, not excuses, protects powerful breeds.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my dog attack brooms, towels or the vacuum?
It is usually a fixation fed by an excited state of mind and accidentally rewarded when people pull the object away or comfort the dog afterward.
How do you stop a dog's fixation on objects?
Lower the dog's excitement, interrupt early with calm corrections, and use walking, place work and repetition to create a new association with the trigger.
Is object fixation dangerous?
Yes. A dog biting the object in your hand can bite the hand. Treat it as a serious behavior and get qualified help.
